Day 020: Getting Acquainted With The Lovers

Out of the many tarot cards I’ve studied across various decks, The Lovers card seems to be the most misunderstood. Today, many tarot readers translate The Lovers into a card of romance, perfect partnership, and sexual passion. However, a quick glance through the Major Arcana and we realize this isn’t quite accurate. If The Lovers is truly the perfect relationship, then why is The Devil necessary? The question is a valid one, and yet, it is rarely asked by modern day tarot readers. Getting acquainted with The Lovers isn’t as easy as one would expect. To do so, we have to explore some sensitive topics, so let’s just get started. Continue reading

Day 018: Getting Acquainted With The Hierophant

For many, the religious overtones of The Hierophant make the card a difficult one to tolerate. Today, we’re often quick to criticize or point out the flaws in our religious leaders. Some religions, are even so new, that we must face harsh criticism of the founders we once looked up to. While we are often quick to embrace religious truth, we’re not so fond of religious structures. The Church, as a functioning group, has seen a rise in criticism today. So, what, if anything, can we learn about The Hierophant? Is this card relevant today, and if so, how do we interpret its tough symbolism? Continue reading

Day 015: Getting Acquainted With The Emperor

The Emperor is one of those tarot cards that often gets neglected in favor of more comforting cards. In the Rider-Waite Smith deck, The Emperor looks stern, demanding, and far too authoritarian. It’s not surprising then, that many women have difficulty connecting to The Emperor card. What many women would be surprised to learn however, is that men likewise have a difficulty with The Emperor. Continue reading

Day 012: Getting Acquainted With The Empress

After analyzing the High Priestess, it’s only a natural progression to The Empress. These two cards are often contrasted against each other, creating a spectrum of female expectation. Many feminists tend to align themselves with the High Priestess, seeing The Empress as a stereotypical subjugation of women. And yet, there are many women who see The Empress as a welcoming mother, an extension of the Goddess. Why do women see the High Priestess and The Empress as an either or? Why don’t men see The Magician and The Emperor similarly? Much of this actually has to do with our understandings of the archetypes involved. Continue reading

Day 007: Getting Acquainted With The High Priestess

Today is the day we finally get to discuss the High Priestess tarot card. This card is such a difficult one to discern the meaning of. Even so, many people connect to the imagery of the High Priestess. There’s something about the card that draws you in seeking more. Why is that? Well, I think I can finally answer that question. Continue reading

Day 005: Getting Acquainted With The Magician

One of the most interesting things about my one card study of The Magician has to do with the archetypes involved. What is The Magician’s true archetype? To me, I’ve always related The Magician to Merlin, the one who helps aid King Arthur. But, at the same time, I relate Merlin with The Hermit. Clearly, there is a problem. While Merlin can contain both aspects, it is helpful to separate the two aspects. So, what is The Magician’s true archetype? Where does he truly belong? Continue reading

Day 002: Getting Acquainted With Tarot

Before attempting my own one card intensive study, I felt like the one person who couldn’t be intuitive. I didn’t notice the finer details, and because of that, I kind of felt less as a tarot reader. What’s important to remember though, is that you have to actually try. The reason I didn’t feel intuitive is because I’d never attempted to be intuitive before. Continue reading
